So in the initial stages of rehab would this be the first thing to focus on, working on pelvic control?

ProPTRehab,
There's dozens of references.
Try these two.
Stuart McGill. JOSPT: 2001;31(2). 96-100.
Peter O'Sullivan. Spine: 1997; 22: 2959-2867.
The references are older but, then, this is not new information.

Like the technique, the only thing is that I'm not convinced said exercises actually train the multifidus, although I'm not definitive about it. I use such exercises too for overall strengthening & trunk control. If you have studies indicating actual multifidus activation, I'd appreciate them. I'm using the ATM2 by backproject with great results, but I too incorporate such exercises. thanks!
